Ten years of mobilization, commitment, and going beyond expectations. Year after year, young people aged 5 to 17 have proved to us again and again that their hearts know no bounds! Today we kicked off the year that will see them fulfill their commitment of raising $5M in 5 years to support the Centre of Excellence in Traumatology.

This morning at the CHU Sainte-Justine, close to a hundred young people from various private schools were on hand in the institution they support so whole-heartedly. Along with Chloé Dufour-Lapointe, they came to see the impact of their efforts and to help launch this very special 10th year of the movement.

Exceptional and incredible – there are almost no words to describe the accomplishment of the thousands of students who take part in the Sainte-Justine Private Schools Youth Challenge. This year will mark the completion of a true philanthropic achievement: an unprecedented youth movement that will have raised $5M in donations for the CHU Sainte-Justine.

Thanks to the Youth Challenge we have a state-of-the-art hospital, among the best in the world. This youth movement is truly a driver of the transformation of care in Quebec.

Accidents are still the leading cause of death among youth under age 18

An accident can happen anytime, anywhere. The young people of the Sainte-Justine Youth Challenge know that all too well. That’s why since 2008, tens of thousands of students across Quebec have taken part in a fundraising sports challenge as a symbol of their support for the victims of childhood accidents.

Every year at Sainte-Justine, traumatology care represents:

  • 12,000 emergency room visits;
  • More than 500 of these accident victims are hospitalized, with 10% of admissions in intensive care;
  • 15% of all emergency room visits;
  • More than 260 patients treated in the operating room.

Running to transform care

Once again this year, the students’ efforts will bring about concrete results in plastic surgery, orthopedics, ophthalmology, emergency care, occupational therapy, and at the Marie Enfant Rehabilitation Centre. Together, the Youth Challenge participants raise the standard of care provided to trauma victims, by enabling the acquisition of equipment such as the HapticMaster VR, the Belmont Rapid Infuser, and the Artic Sun thermal control system.

Arctic Sun 1920X1080
This Artic Sun is designed to monitor and control a patient’s temperature, allowing for a rapid evaluation of their condition. It can even initiate warming if the patient’s temperature drops.
Belmont Rapid Infuser 1920X1080
The Belmont Rapid Infuser is renowned for having saved thousands of lives around the world. It allows for warm blood and liquid to be infused into the body of a patient who has suffered major blood loss.

The HapticMaster VR is a robot used in rehabilitation of the upper body. Thanks to its immersive virtual reality technology, this robot helps with the recovery of patients’ sensory functions.

A Centre of Excellence involves creating the medicine of the future, and therefore investing in research. Thanks to the Youth Challenge, 11 innovative research projects have been launched.

Meet Gabriel, our new ambassador

The victim of a serious accident in 2017 and a student at Collège Esther-Blondin, Gabriel is a new member of the movement’s team of ambassadors. Treated at Sainte-Justine with many medical devices acquired thanks to the Sainte-Justine Youth Challenge, he understands better than anyone the impact of these donations.

Celebrating 10 years of engaged youth

 In 2012, Dr. Dickens Saint-Vil declared that “the Youth Challenge will allow us to offer cutting-edge care, ensuring optimal safety for our patients, and will help us become an international leader in pediatric traumatology.” Six years later, we’ve achieved that goal.

But we won’t stop here. Technology and knowledge are advancing more quickly than ever. And we’ll keep pace for the benefit of tomorrow’s accident victims.

So let’s get started! Happy 10th anniversary!
